Greater Manchester fire fighters return from Haiti

Nine fire-fighters from Greater Manchester who were part of the search and rescue team in Haiti have arrived back in the UK after ten days, because the operation has been declared over.

The team including, Peter Stevenson, 48, who is based at Rochdale fire station, arrived at Manchester International Airport from London Gatwick today (Saturday 23 January 2010).

The fire-fighters were greeted by their families and colleagues from the service on their arrival in Manchester.

Chief Fire Officer Steve McGuirk, said:"It is with great pride that I welcome back safely the members of our service to their families. They have demonstrated tenacity, professionalism and courage in taking part in the UK national response to help the people of Haiti.

“The successes they have achieved are truly commendable in a time of such devastation and suffering, and whilst we are extremely grateful to have them back with us, our thoughts remain with the people of Haiti as they continue to try and rebuild their country.

“I am sure our team members will now be looking forward to a well earned rest and spending some quality time with their families and friends who have shown so much support for their loved ones over the last 10 days."
