Man jailed for stabbing 16-year-old

Kamran Akram has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison after assaulting a 16-year-old with a knife.

A man who stabbed a 16-year-old boy in the neck and chest has been jailed.

Kamran Akram, 27, of Kingsway, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent (section 18 assault) at Minshull Street Crown Court.

Akram was sentenced to two years and three months in prison.

On the evening of Tuesday 6 January 2009, Akram called at the victim's workplace on Oldham Road in his car.

The victim got into his car and Akram drove a short distance before pulling over on a back street.

He pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim in the chest and neck. The victim tried to grab the knife off him in order to defend himself but ended up severely cutting his hands.

He managed to get out of the car and ran to his sister's house, where he was taken to hospital.

The victim had four stitches to his chest and ten to his neck. He also had to undergo surgery for tendon and nerve damage to his hand.

Hours later Akram was arrested and a knife was recovered from a local canal a short distance away from his house.

Detective Constable Matthew Cassidy from Rochdale CID said: "Akram could easily have killed the victim in this attack and clearly had no regard for his life.

"We have all seen the consequences of knife crime and how easily someone's life can be taken away, and it disgusts me how people can still be so irresponsible and carry them around.

"Fortunately the victim in this case has recovered from his injuries and I hope today's sentence helps him move on from what happened."
