Year 10 attended a Chemistry lecture on Wednesday 13 January held at the Medical School of Manchester University. The topic of the lecture given by Professor Collinson, was entitled “The Excitement of Science”. They found out about how explosions occur using different elements, including hydrogen and helium. He made a rocket from a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen, using an empty plastic bottle; which the scientists from NASA invented. He also made mini fireworks with different coloured flames and tested different sizes of glass tubes to see which had the loudest bang! They found the experience of visiting the university and having an explosive lecture most rewarding and now cannot wait to go to University themselves. The school would like to thank Mr Fryer for his sponsorship of the event.

The Junior and Senior debating teams entertained the Chadderton and Failsworth Rotary club at the Swallow Hotel. The Junior presentation, made by Lydia Nightingale, Jessica Timperley and Bethany Moat was entitled ‘ The Views of Young People in Society.’ The Senior team composed of Jack Noon, Jason Scales and Aleem Tahir discussed ‘ Empowering and Encouraging Young Enterprise’.
