Food parcels for the elderly and vulnerable
Date published: 15 January 2010

Elderly resident Roger Wareing receives a food parcel from Paul Gala and Lyndon Price of Age Concern.
Age Concern in Rochdale has teamed up with Westway Nissan, ASDA and Rochdale Borough Council to deliver food parcels to elderly people within the borough who are struggling to get out and about to do food shopping.
The recent cold snap has left a lot of elderly residents housebound due to the treacherous conditions on pavements across Rochdale.
Deliveries started yesterday and will continue today (Friday 15 Januray) and tomorrow to elderly and vulnerable people across the borough who have been identified by Age Concern. The delivery team are hoping to get parcels to 90 people across the borough.
ASDA has given discount on shopping to enable these food parcels to be put together and funding from the Older People's Budget has been given to make this operation successful. A Car from Westway Nissan will be used to deliver the parcels.
Paul Gala from Age Concern said: “The appalling weather has meant that people can’t get out to do their shopping. By delivering these parcels we are ensuring that the service users we have identified throughout the year have enough food throughout this bad weather spell.”
Councillor Pauline Maguire Portfolio Holder for Older People said: “This operation shows that the voluntary sector, businesses and councils can all work together.”
