Ukrainian carol singers visit Mayor’s Parlour
Ukrainian carol singers visited the Mayor’s Parlour on Friday (8 January) to sing traditional Ukrainian carols to the Mayor and Mayoress.
Ukrainians in the borough celebrated their Christmas on Thursday in line with the Julian calendar.
Christmas began on Christmas Eve on 6 January with the sighting of the first star in the sky - which signals the start of the evening meal.
In Rochdale, members of the Ukrainian community from The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain and The Ukrainian Youth Association in Great Britain, visited houses of fellow Ukrainians in the borough and Rochdale Town Hall.
The singers were then given a tour of the Mayor’s Parlour and adjoining rooms.
After leaving the Town Hall, the carol singers continued on their rounds and over the course of three days entertained at the homes of more than 40 Ukrainian people and enriched their celebration of Christmas.
