Welcome for age limit rise for buying cigarettes

Date published: 08 January 2007

The rise in the legal age for buying cigarettes and tobacco, that will come into force in October 2007, has been welcomed by Rochdale Council and Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale PCT.

About 9% of 11 to 15 year olds smoke, and the change in the law is aimed at reducing this. In Rochdale it is estimated that as many as 12% of 12 to 15 year olds are already smoking.

The Cabinet Member for Environment amp; Sustainability, Councillor Wera Hobhouse said: "Raising the age for buying cigarettes complements all the efforts we are making to help people to stop smoking. Helping young people not to start smoking will help to prevent cancers and many other health problems.

"The success of this change will depend on effective enforcement, and making sure people are aware of it. Trading standards will continue to carry out test purchasing to ensure shopkeepers know the law and abide by it. It makes sense that the age is the same for buying tobacco as it is for buying alcohol, which will make it easier for retailers and customers."

If people do buy cigarettes, they will need to prove their age. Application forms for proof of age cards are available from Rochdale Council Trading Standards at Telegraph House, Baillie Street, Rochdale, or by calling 0845 4040506.

The age increase will come into force on 1 October, three months after the ban on smoking in workplaces, including bars and restaurants, is introduced.

Wendy Meston, Public Health Consultant for Rochdale Borough said: "Smoking is one of our leading causes of premature death and illness and we support any measure that aims to improve the health of local people now and in the future."

"Raising the age limit fits well with other initiatives that the PCT, in partnership with the council and other agencies, are implementing to help prevent young people from smoking and help those who want to give up.
