Rochdale Borough Council – gritting latest
Date published: 23 December 2009
Gritting supplies are currently at 100 to 120 tons with additional stocks loaded on gritting vehicles today, giving an approximate total supply of 150 to 170 tons. This would give up to three days gritting potential - enough grit to cover the borough’s needs across high traffic routes. Deliveries of grit are also expected tomorrow.
Main roads are continuing to be gritted and are mostly passable. Side streets however continue to be affected by frozen snow and ice, and gritting of these areas will not be effective as grit only works when large volumes of vehicles use gritted roads. As such, side streets will remain danger spots for the next couple of days until temperatures rise.
Gritting teams are operating and responding to specific requests for gritting treatment as well as carrying out routine gritting of main walkways and thoroughfares across the borough. Due to the scale and thickness of lying snow and ice it is taking some time to treat but this in an ongoing priority.
- There is enough grit for the borough’s priority routes (high traffic routes)
- Additional stocks are being loaded on vehicles today giving an approximate total supply of 150 to 170 tons – giving up to three days gritting potential across the borough
- Concentration has been on gritting priority routes
- Side streets continue to be affected, however gritting will not clear these areas as grit only works when a large volume of vehicles use a road to allow grit to bed into the ice
- Another grit will be carried out this evening and tomorrow morning
- A further delivery of grit is scheduled for tomorrow
- Regular reviews of alternative grit supplies carried out as a prudent planning measure
