Police in Rochdale arrested more than 40 people as part of a crackdown on violent offenders.

Homes across the Borough were raided, resulting in a total of 45 arrests.

Chief Superintendent John O’Hare, for Rochdale Division, said: “The initiative has been a real success and I hope to see the good work of our officers continue.

“This type of crime causes pain and suffering to lots of people so this kind of operation is a reminder to any would be offenders that their actions won’t be tolerated and our officers will take appropriate action.”

In addition to the arrests officers used a mobile metal detector in the town centre on Friday (18 December) to deter people from carrying knives. The knife arch was located outside a number of licensed premises to ensure a safe and enjoyable night for all.

“The last Friday before the Christmas break typically marks a time when revellers come into our town centres for a final night out with friends and colleagues before the festive period with many of the bars and pubs opening earlier than normal," continued Mr O'Hare.

“In order to ensure everyone had a crime free and enjoyable time a number of tactics were used to reassure people and keep them safe and the knife arch was just one of them.”

Police Officers, and Police Community Support Officers also made checks to licensed premises as part of Operation Aegis, which focuses on the night-time economy. Extra patrols were also working in the parks and open spaces of the Borough to ensure youngsters breaking up for the end of term did not taking part in anti-social behaviour.

Chief Supt O’Hare added: “I would like to remind everyone of our acceptable behaviour scheme. It can potentially ban a person for up to two years from all of the town’s licensed premises, so anyone found taking part in violence, criminal damage or drugs could be made subject to the scheme.

“Revellers are reminded to take care of themselves during the festive period and to drink safely.”
