Fire service warns of ice dangers

Frozen Lake
Warnings have been issued on the extreme dangers of icy water this winter as the current cold weather conditions look set to continue.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has emphasised that frozen and icy water presents extreme danger and even short exposure can have fatal consequences.
They are urging people not to go onto ice-covered lakes, ponds or rivers.
Each year a number of incidents occur, highlighting the dangers in and around lakes, ponds and canals.
The ice closest to the bank may appear to be thick but it becomes thinner towards the middle.
County Fire Officer Steve McGuirk said: “It is an almost inevitable fact that a spate of cold weather usually means we will find ourselves attending incidents involving someone who has got into difficulty whilst playing on or near a frozen pond or waterway. It may seem attractive to people but it is all too easy for them to get into trouble.”
Children are most at risk and the dangers of playing on ice and frozen ponds should be emphasised to them.
Further danger occurs when owners attempt to rescue pets that have become stranded, leading people to risk their own lives.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service operates two specialist water incident units in Heywood and Eccles, operated by fire fighters specially trained and equipped to respond to water incidents.
If a dog or another animal falls through the ice, do not go to its rescue. If the ice did not support the animal it will not take your weight.
Always call the Emergency Services on 999 and if you do see a person or animal in difficulties call 999 and direct the Emergency Services on their arrival.
