Cars torched in arson attacks
Date published: 11 December 2009
Arsonists torched three cars in random attacks this morning (Friday 11 December).
At 2am a red Peugeot 206 was set on fire on Peel Street, Falinge, causing the side windows to smash and damage to the driver's side tyres, bumper and interior.
About an hour later, a white Transit van was set alight on Jane Street damaging the off side tyres and causing smoke damage to the inside.
At about the same time a Nissan Almera was set on fire on Emma Street, causing all the windows to smash and extensive damage to the front of the car.
It is believed paper had been piled up against the cars and then ignited.
Police are now appealing to anyone who has information about the fires to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Graham Hook, from Rochdale CID, said: "We are treating this spate of fires as totally random, motiveless attacks.
"Those responsible for these arson attacks might have thought it was funny or 'hard', but for the victims it will cause them a great deal of misery trying to get the cars fixed, sort out insurance and replacement cars. This is the sort of headache no one should have to deal with.
"I would also like to send a message to the culprits that if we catch you, you will find nothing funny as we will throw the book at you.
"If anyone does have information about these fires then please call us. We are taking this very seriously as arson is a very dangerous crime, and any information we do get that will help us find and punish those responsible will help give the victims some justice."
Anyone with any information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4644 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
