Green Team makes progress in Kirkholt

Date published: 10 December 2009

Rochdale’s Green Team is working hard to give communal areas in Kirkholt a much needed make over.

The land off Queens Drive next to the Kirkholt medical centre has been transformed by the green fingered helpers.

The team has been set up by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing and Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale. It is designed to give young unemployed people in the Rochdale area an opportunity to develop their environmental skills.

Community Services Manager for Groundwork Oldham and Rochdale, Phil Treaton, said: “Our aim is to improve green spaces across Rochdale. This is one of the first tasks that the team has done and they have really improved it.

“It is good to see the local community taking part in this clean up.”

Paul Dockerty, Environment co-ordinator from Rochdale Boroughwide Housing is pleased with the progress the team has made, he said: “The team have started off very well and they are moving along quickly. The initial feedback we have had has been very positive.

“I think we are achieving two aims, firstly we are providing employment and skills to help young people get jobs and secondly residents are getting the benefits from the team's work as the area is being better maintained."

The team is made up of youngsters throughout the borough and they have been working on projects across Rochdale, Middleton and Heywood since November.

They are tidying up areas across the Borough that have become overgrown, untidy and full of litter.
