Rochdale teen spends a day fighting crime

Date published: 09 December 2009

A Rochdale teenager experienced what life would be like as a police officer today when he joined Rochdale Police force for operation Admiral II.

Anthony Mannion, 16, from Smithybridge, joined the team as they carried out raids to hunt down criminals who have outstanding warrants.

This is the first time a young person has taken part in such an operation.

Anthony joined the team for the briefing at 7am and spent some time out in the van with them, where he saw three people arrested.

Anthony is currently studying brickwork at Hopwood Hall College, he said: “I have had a good day, and I have enjoyed being out with the police. I have learnt that they will always catch criminals and they do it in a smart way.”

Anthony was given the opportunity to get on board when he won the ‘Natural Leadership award’ from Rochdale Connections Trust at a ceremony in November.

Chief Superintendent John O’Hare said: “Having natural leadership is a real strength and after seeing Anthony at the awards we made him an offer to spend some time with us and see how police operations and briefings work.

“Anthony has had insight today into the work we do. To have a skill in leadership is great and we hope he maximises it and uses it to make a difference.”
