Police name and shame criminals

Date published: 03 December 2009

Greater Manchester Police is naming and shaming criminals that have been brought to justice.

Posters and leaflets, with the offender’s photograph, the offence, including burglary and vehicle crime, and details of their sentence, are being displayed in local communities to show how criminals are being brought to justice.

In a recent survey in Manchester 87% of residents in an area where the posters were used felt more positive about the police after being given the information.

The initiative to show how justice is being done is being backed by the Ministry of Justice, which today (Thursday 3 December) published guidance on publicising sentencing outcomes.

Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said: “People in Greater Manchester want to know what happens to the offenders who are plaguing their communities.

“We recently produced posters of two convicted killers, Joyce and Amos, showing the aging process they’ll go through behind bars. This had an extremely positive impact on our communities and we’re building on this by telling people what has happened to those offenders affecting their lives.

“Offenders across Greater Manchester should be warned that they could end up being named and shamed within their communities.”
