A Heywood Community High School student has been named the top ICT and science pupil in the region.
Joe Munroe beat off stiff competition to reach the finals of the Greater Manchester Student Awards and was then named the winner of the ICT category at the awards ceremony on Monday night (30 November).
Two other students from Heywood High and three groups of pupils from Falinge Park High School were also recognised at the finals. James Goodwin and Aminoor Ali, Katie Marie Snape, Tazmina Khatun and Farhan Ali Khan, Shannon Wilkinson, Daniel Brown and Rahima Begum, all of Falinge Park, and Amy Noon, of Heywood Community High, were shortlisted for the top drama prize, while Delal Asutay, also from the Heywood school, was runner-up in creative writing.
Neil Wilson, Head of Year 9 at Heywood Community High School, said: “I am proud of all three of the students for what they have achieved. The awards are recognition of the ongoing hard work and determination of both staff and students to ensure that Heywood Community High School continues to be one of the most improved schools in the country.
“I would like to express my thanks to Fran and Marek from Aimhigher Rochdale for their ongoing help and support and ensuring that our children receive a broad and balanced Aimhigher curriculum.”
Head Teacher Mr Yates added: “The pupils are wonderful ambassadors for our school and the wider community and have deservedly been recognised for their outstanding achievements.”
The Greater Manchester Student Awards celebrated and rewarded the region’s next generation of writers, scientists, artists and musicians.
The competition was open to all state school students in Years 9 and 10 and covered categories including art and design, science and creative writing.
