Date published: 08 February 2007

Popular Norden Councillor Wera Hobhouse has been selected  as the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the Heywood and Middleton at the next General Election. Wera, currently the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability said: “I thank our growing membership in Heywood and Middleton for backing me and the work starts from now.

"Due to boundary changes, Heywood and Middleton is now much more winnable for the Liberal Democrats and I have every confidence that the voters of Heywood and Middleton will back our positive campaign.

"In the local elections in May, we polled more votes that Labour in the Heywood Constituency.  It is now my job to convert this into Parliamentary votes and I am excited at the prospect – this seat is there for the taking, the Liberal Democrats are determined to win it.”

Leader of Rochdale Council, Councillor Alan Taylor said: “Wera is an excellent candidate who I know will work solidly for the whole constituency.  As the Council Leader I will give her every possible support.”

The Liberal Democrats hold more seats than ever before in Heywood and Middleton, having representatives in Norden, Bamford, Castleton, Heywood North and Middleton East.  Campaigners say they are working hard to gain even more seats in May.
