Awards night honour for students

Date published: 30 November 2009

A host of pupils from Rochdale schools could be winners tonight after becoming finalists in the Greater Manchester Student Awards competition.

Three groups of students from Falinge Park High School and three pupils from Heywood Community High School beat off stiff competition from other talented students from across Greater Manchester to reach the final.

The awards are being held at the Imperial War Museum North in Trafford, where the students will get the chance to explore the museum and meet “Coronation Street” star, Ben Thompson, who plays Ryan Connor.

James Goodwin and Aminoor Ali, Katie Marie Snape, Tazmina Khatun and Farhan Ali Khan, Shannon Wilkinson, Daniel Brown and Rahima Begum, all of Falinge Park, and Amy Noon, of Heywood Community High, were shortlisted for the top drama prize, while Delal Asutay and Joe Munroe, also from the Heywood school, were nominated for the creative writing and science and ICT gongs respectively.

The Greater Manchester Student Awards celebrate and reward the region’s next generation of writers, scientists, artists and musicians.

The competition was open to all state school students in Years 9 and 10 and covered categories including art and design, science and creative writing.
