Keep warm and well this winter
Date published: 29 November 2009
Residents across the borough of Rochdale are being reminded to ‘Keep Warm, Keep Well’ during the cold wintry weather.
Cold, especially extreme cold, can be dangerous for everyone and in particular for older people and those with long term conditions.
“We are much more likely to catch colds and flu as the weather gets colder and if your body temperature drops then the risks of a heart attack, stroke and breathing difficulties increase,” explains Dr Sheila Will, Director of Public Health at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale. “It’s important to make sure you keep warm and well and live as healthy a lifestyle as possible by eating and drinking healthily and taking regular exercise, as well as keeping your home warm and wrapping yourself up when you go out.”
Top tips:
- Heat your home well
By setting your heating to the right temperature (between 18–21°C or 64–70°F), you can still keep your home warm and lower your bills. If you feel cold at night, use a hot water bottle or electric blanket – but never use both together. - Get financial support
There are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills. It’s worthwhile claiming all of the benefits you are entitled to. - Eat well Food is a vital source of energy, which helps to keep your body warm. Try to make sure you and your family have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day.
- Get a seasonal flu jab
If you or your children have a long-term health condition, you can get a free jab from your GP to protect against seasonal flu strains. - Look after yourself and others Remember to wrap up warm if you need to go outside on cold days. If you have an older neighbour or relative, look out for them during winter to make sure they are safe and well.
