Increased police presence in Town Centre
Date published: 25 November 2009
Local police have stopped many groups of youths entering the town centre and hanging around the Exchange Centre and Yorkshire Street, outside McDonalds especially, over the last few weeks but acknowledge there are a few individuals that still need identifying and monitoring.
The police are hopeful that the increased visible police presence - the police start a new shift pattern in the town centre which will result in increased day time coverage - will help deter them over the next few weeks in the run up to Christmas.
The police have also had the go ahead to target regular 'drunk' offenders using specific legislation which will support long term objectives – target offenders will be detained just for being drunk on a highway when the criteria fits. The increase in patrols over the next few weeks should also tackle evening issues regarding drunkenness and disorder.
