Cowm Reservoir could supply drinking water
Date published: 25 November 2009
A Greater Manchester reservoir closed by a polution scare 35 years ago could once again supply drinking water.
In 1975 a huge pile of dumped tyres was set on fire in a quarry above the Cowm Reservoir in Whitworth.
Pollutants were washed into the reservoir, which was the main source of drinking water for the town.
United Utilities said it was looking at the feasibility of the reservoir, which had 'recovered completely,' providing water for Rochdale again.
