Gearing cars up for winter
Date published: 23 November 2009
As winter approaches, Greater Manchester Police’s Traffic Network Section is launching an operation to let motorists know how best to maintain their vehicles over the winter months and stay safe.
Officers will be particularly targeting headlights, but will also be looking at tyre tread depths and giving drivers advice on how to keep themselves and others safe this winter.
Chief Inspector Andy Holmes said: “Defective lighting on vehicles can be a cause of road traffic collisions as during extended hours of darkness, motorists and pedestrians are more reliant upon lighting.
“It is important for motorists to realise that they are responsible for ensuring their vehicle is fit for the road, particularly over the winter months when bad weather can have a significant impact upon driving conditions.
"Maintaining your vehicle to the correct standard could very well mean the difference between life and death.
"Officers will continue to highlight the importance of vehicle maintenance with motorists on a daily basis, in order to reduce casualties on our roads.”
