Siddal Moor Sports College wins place in regional final
Date published: 11 March 2007
Siddal Moor Sports College took first place in the local heat of the Citizenship Foundation Magistrates Court Mock Trials competition on Saturday 10 March, which means a place in the regional final for the Heywood School - for the second year running.
The Year 9 squad of fourteen pupils took on the roles of magistrates, lawyers, defendants, witnesses and court staff to simulate a case examining animal rights and the responsibility of care. The team, coached by Head of History, Stephen Price, enacted the case twice at the Rochdale Magistrates courts on Saturday 10 March. Firstly they took on the role of defence against prosecutors St. Amrose Barlow Technology College from Swinton and then prosecuted the case against students from Saint Patrick’s secondary school, Eccles.
The five schools who took part in the event were judged on their performances by a team of real magistrates and legal professionals who awarded first place and a trip to the Regional Heats in May, to the Siddal Moor team. The team hopes this year they can go one stage better and get to the National finals which will be held in June.
