Elmwood Primary School tour of Middleton police station

Date published: 17 November 2009

Pupils from Elmwood Primary School were treated to a tour of Middleton police station.

Police Constable Robert Smith and Police Community Support Officer Dominique Grimes walked the 14 children aged seven to 11 through the station.

The two told the youngsters about road safety, the dangers of talking to strangers and what to do if they get lost. They also explained to the children about the police’s role in the community and let them handle some of the equipment that a police officer carries as well as letting them see the inside of a police car and a police cell.

PC Smith said: “The visit is a good opportunity to meet the children and tell them what we do. Police officers can sometimes appear intimidating, especially to small children, and this helps us to answer their questions about the police and show them they can approach an officer if they see them on the street.”

Kate Hunter, learning mentor at Elmwood Primary School, said: “The whole visit was beneficial to the pupils it taught them about what it would be like if they were to get in trouble with police and why they should listen to what they are told by teachers and officers alike.

“We have had some really positive feedback from the pupils and the police were fantastic with them, we would definitely like this to continue for the rest of the school.”
