Jazz tribute to Harry Cameron
Date published: 11 November 2009
The Jazz Club lost a long standing regular with the passing of Harry Cameron in January 2009.
Harry was always happiest at Castleton, and he chose to leave his collection of Jazz books, CDs, tapes and vinyl to his friends which his brother-in-law Bob Cavanagh brought along to the gigs with the request to the enthusiasts: “Help yourselves and enjoy”.
The organising committee decided to commemorate Harry’s life with the awarding of a trophy for the band of the year chosen by ballot of the regulars of Jazz on a Sunday, and the period chosen was to coincide with the return to Castleton – September 2008 to August 2009.
In third place was The Les Bull Band from Cumbria, in second place the multi national New Orleans Heat and the first winners of the Harry Cameron Memorial Trophy with 30% of the vote The Tame Valley Stompers.
As the Stompers are the opening band of 2010 the trophy will be presented at the gig at Castleton on Sunday 10 January 2010. Congratulations.
