Early Environmentalists
Date published: 10 November 2009
Children from Alkrington SureStart Children’s Centre, with a little help from their parents, are taking trips into the woods each Thursday as they make their own bat and bird boxes.
On their first trip, which included using hammers and nails to build the boxes, they also made dens and carved pumpkins.
Future trips will find out if the boxes are being used and other outdoor activities are planned.
The session provides children with an opportunity to experience outdoor play in a natural environment. The children also learn about nature and conservation as well as life skills, such as team work and co-operation.
Ruth French (Early Years Worker) said: “The session was a great success. The children and families really seemed to enjoy it. Outdoor play is such an important part of children’s development and it is fantastic that so many children got to experience it.”
