Date published: 23 March 2007

Detectives in Rochdale are appealing for witnesses after a man was shot at a house in Heywood Thursday (22 March) night.

At about 7pm officers were called to Hilda Street following reports that a 23-year-old man had been shot in the leg.

Officers attended and the man was found with a bullet wound to his leg. He was taken to Fairfield General Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The offender is described as a white man, around 5'10'' tall and of stocky build. He was wearing a white and green striped top and black trainers at the time of the shooting.

Detective Constable Damien McLaughlin from Rochdale CID said: "I would like to reassure members of the local community that we are working hard to find the man who did this, and that, this sort of incident is incredibly rare in Heywood.

"I want to make it clear that police will absolutely not tolerate gun crime. We want to appeal to anybody who might have any information about this shooting to get in touch, and assure them that any information given will be treated in the strictest of confidence."

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4644, 856 4557 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
