Peace Group thanks two out of three local MPs

Date published: 27 March 2007

Rochdale and Littleborough Peace Group has written to Jim Dobbin and Paul Rowen thanking them for voting against Trident Replacement on 14 March 2007.  However, the group continued its criticism of Phil Woolas whom they have already accused of being “an inveterate warmonger”, because of his continued support for the invasion of Iraq and for the upgrading of Trident.

Their letters told the two Jim Dobbin and Paul Rowen: “The peace group were very pleased to know that you voted against the government’s plans to upgrade the Trident nuclear weapons system. Like you, we totally reject the idea of squandering our taxes on weapons of mass destruction and want our money to be spent on saving and improving people’s lives, not on the means to destroy them. We shall, of course, be continuing our campaign against this nuclear madness, until this decision is reversed.”

On behalf of the peace group, Philip Gilligan said: “On 14 March 2007, Phil Woolas voted with the warmonger wing of his own party, just as he did in March 2003. His actions remind us that, if the electorate of Oldham East and Saddleworth want to make a contribution to a more peaceful world, they will need to vote for someone other than ‘Woolas the Warmonger’ at the next general election”.
