Fire service museum open day

Date published: 04 October 2009

The Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum open their doors to the public on the first Sunday of every month. The fire service museum has a collection of restored fire engines and fire service equipment and memorabilia from years gone by.

Occasionally the open day is themed, however, today it was just an opportunity to open the doors and give people from the borough, and visitors from further afield a chance to have a look around.

Mr Tariq was at the open day with this 3-year-old son Haseeb, he said: “Haseeb is a really big fireman Sam fan and he is so intrigued by the fire station so of course we came to have a look around.

“We generally try to come to all of the open days, there is one every month. It is certainly fun for the little ones but for me it is a memory of the days gone by, I think it is a super day.”

When asked if he would like to be a fireman when he was older, Haseeb replied with a very excited "yes".

Bob Bonner, Officer in Charge said: “We have had over 50 people here this morning and it turned out to be a really great day.

“This time of year is when it really quietens down for us, however, we did have a really successful summer with the open days and the next big event will be the Christmas themed day.”

Les Reid who also works at the Museum said: “Everybody seems to have really enjoyed the day; we have had visitors from Liverpool, Southport and Chorley.”

This year's Christmas themed open day will be held on Sunday 6 December at the Fire Service Museum, where there will be something for everybody including a visit from Father Christmas.
