Stone throwing at vehicles - police issue warning

Date published: 29 September 2009

Police in Rochdale have issued a warning to motorists following a number of stone throwing attacks on vehicles.

Since April there have been ten incidents where motorists have been attacked with bricks and stones while they have been driving.

A spate of these types of attacks in recent weeks includes an incident at the footbridge before junction 21 of the M62 when an object was thrown at the windscreen of a passing vehicle resulting in it smashing at impact.

A similar incident occurred at the bridge over Slattocks Links Road (A627m) when an object was thrown at the windscreen of a passing vehicle causing it to smash.

Detective Inspector Steve Earnshaw for Rochdale Division, said: “These type of unscrupulous attacks are malicious and endanger the lives of those that are made targets. While there has not been an incident where someone has been left injured or harmed this is a possibility and something that we would like to avert from happening.

“I would like to issue a warning to those taking part in these attacks that it will not be tolerated. You will be caught out and prosecuted for your actions.”

Patrols have now been increased in hot spot locations across the Rochdale Borough.
