Sacred Heart

Relics are important to us as they are a part of our Christian heritage. At the commencement of every Mass I kiss the altar as a sign of respect to the altar of Sacrifice, also to venerate the relics of two early Christian martyrs St Prosperus and St Sabrinianus, and a relic of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque buried in the altar.

Relics remind us of our Christian past and encourage us to pray for the intercessions of the saints.

Thirty thousand people from all over the Diocese visited our Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist in Chapel St. Salford last weekend. They were there to venerate the Relics of St. Therese of Lisieux, affectionately known as the Little Flower. Our coach of 49 parishioners thought it was a truly blessed occasion, most prayerful yet joyful and happy meeting people from so may other parishes. A tremendous number of young couples with very young children.

Last Thursday, the Feast of St Therese, the Relics were received into York Minster the great Church of England Cathedral – the first time the relics had been taken into a church that wasn’t Roman Catholic.

New Altar Servers: Congratulations to Orlaith Maskew, Niamh Simpson, Dylan Forbes, Denver Bouic & Isaac Whitesman and their families. They looked splendid in their new cassocks and cottas – thanks to Monica Reade who washes and irons all 27 sets of altar clothes.

The Sacramental Programme Meeting of Catechists on Monday held in the Presbytery was excellently attended. There are 10 catechists this year, new and old, plus the parish coordinator, and they are all enthusiastic for new Programme which continued on Thursday, with the second meeting for parents and on Saturday with the first meeting for children. All were delighted to hear that Bishop Brain will be here to confirm the children on Tuesday 11th May 2010 at 7.30 pm.

A letter of thanks “This little note brings sincere thanks to all who worked so hard to make the Indian Summer Tea such a glorious event. It was lovely to see the young working generously with the adults. A second year student from St. Cuthbert’s told me he was in charge of our table and wanted to make sure we were all happy – he made us laugh. Food wonderful; entertainment excellent.” Sister Collette (Franciscan House).
