Woolas: Labour is best for the region
Date published: 28 September 2009
Oldham MP Phil Woolas, whose constituency covers Milnrow and Newhey, last night gave a rallying call to the Labour party conference to get out there and win — saying the Tories would desert the North.
In his role as North West regional minister Mr Woolas said the Conservative party could not place where the region was on a map and would not represent its needs in Parliament.
Speaking to North West delegates he said: “We have got a heck of a fight on our hands but we are determined to go to the country and show the North West is best served under Labour. Britain’s best chance for a future is Gordon Brown.”
Joking with the audience, the Oldham East and Saddleworth MP said he had ordered 72 copies of the ordnance survey map for the Torie's hopeful MPs ahead of their party conference in Manchester next week, and said David Cameron probably thought Deansgate was a political scandal.
Mr Woolas said: “There are 15 key marginals in the North West we need to win, we have more Labour MPs than any other region and the Tories would decimate our areas.”
Arriving to chants of “Gordon Gordon” the Prime Minister said the North West was the most successful region for Labour across the country and urged the members to get out and keep fighting.
He said: “The election will not be a referendum on the Government, it is about two opposing political philosophies.
“We have done many things against the odds, and we will win whatever the odds.”
