Police targeting domestic violence
Date published: 23 September 2009
Don't suffer in silence — that’s the message to abuse victims as police crack down on domestic violence.
Research has highlighted an increase in incidents reported to police around the time of high-profile sporting events and when more alcohol is consumed.
From the start of April to the end of August this year more than 30,000 incidents were reported to Greater Manchester Police, but officers are aware that many other incidents go unreported.
In the UK, two women are killed by their partner or ex-partner every week and one in four women and one in six men will suffer domestic abuse at some time in their life.
GMP is highlighting the impact of domestic abuse on families and highlighting the support and advice available to help victims.
Police are also asking people to report any concerns for their neighbours, family or friends so they can act.
As well as the police there are a number of organisations in place to support victims such as Women’s Aid and Victim Support.
To contact your local domestic abuse unit call the GMP on 0161-872 5050. In an emergency where there is an immediate threat to life or property, always call 999.
People can also contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 if they suspect a family member, friend or neighbour is suffering from domestic abuse.
