Girls' Ramadhan charity project

A group of British Muslim Girls in Rochdale has been working on a special Ramadhan charity project.

Led by Shaista Nazir, a textile artist, the girls started their Sunday sessions at the Deeplish Community Centre this month learning how to design hand-made Eid Cards.

Samina Hussain, a club coordinator, said: “They decided to try and raise money for a local charity during Ramadhan by making and selling different craft items.” Her colleague, Attiya Malik, added: “The girls hope to make their own donation towards Springhill Hospice fundraising.”

The individual cards ended up selling as fast as the girls could make them, before they moved onto the art of crafting ‘fun-dip’ or ‘dip-film’ flower ornaments and decorations, in an eye-catching range of different colours.

Attia Irshad, a centre volunteer, described the technique: “You bend fine wire into the shape of a flower petal and carefully dip it in a can of special, resin-like liquid, gently pull it out, leave it to dry and then group the petals together to create a unique flower. They can be delicate to handle, but they’re very attractive and quite unusual.”
