Campaign against fly-tipped mess continues

Date published: 14 September 2009

Five months after a Sparthbottoms Road resident contacted Rochdale Online to complain of dumped waste near her home, she says that the problem is now worse than ever.

Elizabeth Wood, of Sparthbottoms Road, told Rochdale Online in April that she was disgusted with the amount of fly-tipped rubbish at the side of her house.

Rochdale Council said at the time that they were dealing with the problem but Mrs Wood says that are still piles of rubbish in the street and she is determined to get the problem solved once and for all.

"I am very fed up now with this," she said. "I have complained, my neighbours have complained, and still we are putting up with this.

"My house is an end house and the next three houses from mine are empty and it has been like that for some years now.

"About three years ago it got cleaned up by people who volunteered alongside a couple of good neighbours. It looked lovely but now the fly tipping has come back with a vengeance.

"I have a disabled son who is only allowed to walk round the block but I can't let him now for fear of him hurting himself on the rubbish. We have also had drug takers braking into the empty houses and leaving needles behind. The houses have also been set on fire a few times.

"Children have just gone back to school but while they were off they were exploring in the mess.

"I am so worked up by this. I need to try to sort it out not just for me but for my neighbours and their children."

The Council is now encouraging witnesses to come forward in the hope of catching the culprits.

Jane Walsh, Principal Enforcement Officer at Rochdale Borough Council said: “We are currently investigating further incidents of fly tipping at this location and the appropriate action will again be taken.

"This is a hot spot for fly tipping and we are constantly trying to identify offenders. We would urge people to contact us if they have any information as to who the perpetrators could be, as this would significantly help in our efforts to sort out this ongoing problem. Any information given to us will be treated confidentially.”
