Celebrating 205 years of Rochdale Canal

Date published: 08 September 2009

It is 205 years since the completion of the Rochdale Canal and Rochdale Canal Society will be celebrating that fact on Sunday 20 September.

There will be many attractions at the Annual Summit Rally, including boat trips, a brass band and refreshments.

The event takes place between 10am and 4pm by the Canal, between the Summit Pub and Gordon Riggs' Garden Centre.

Sheila Acton, from the Canal Society, said: "The Canal is one of the borough's greatest assets. Today it is used for leisure and recreational activities and is popular with boaters, anglers, cyclists, walkers, wildlife and nature enthusiasts and loads more.

"If the sun shines it will be a great day but the weather will not stop the society members being there. We are used to the changes in the weather so we will still be there even if it rains!"
