Swimmers go in search of monster for charity

Date published: 24 August 2009

A group of swimmers from Rochdale will go in search of the Loch Ness Monster in a bid to raise funds for charity.

Nigel Coles, Gordon Longley and Rich Ainley, who are all members at Fitness First Gym on Sandbrook Park, will join their friends Howard Coles, Michelle Stewart and Nathan Doggett, and take to the icy depths of Loch Ness in search of its most famous inhabitant.

The team will take it in turns to complete a combined swim of the full 23 mile length of the Loch.

The first swimmer from the relay will take to the water, which is measured at 4 degrees centigrade, at 4.30 on Saturday morning (29 August) on the Inverness side of the Loch. The team will swim throughout the day to reach Fort Augustus at the other side.

Organiser Nigel Coles said: "The time duration of each relay leg will hinge upon how long each person can manage to endure the icy temperature.

"Other than the opportunity to catch a glimpse of 'Nessie' herself, and ofcourse enjoy the breathtaking scenery, the swim does have a serious intention.

"The aim is to raise funds and awareness of Rainbow's Children's Hospice and indeed the Hospice movement for adults and children in general."

Rainbow's, which is based in Loughborough, have cared for hundreds of children and their families since its inception in 1995. They are currently trying to raise £4 million for the construction of a new wing at the hospice.
