Councillor Dearnley calls on Council to ‘stop the spin’

Date published: 23 August 2009

Leader of the Conservative Gorup on Rochdale Borough Council, Councillor Ashley Dearnley, has called on the Council to "stop the spin".

Councillor Dearnley was speaking out about the recent revelation that the Council has put 'Christmas Lights' up in Milnrow already. He said: "I first heard about the installation of Christmas lights on the radio and could not believe the Council’s spin on this issue. To try to say that these lights depicting sledges and winter scenes had been put up early because of other religious festivals is insulting to everyone, especially to those of other faiths.

"Then to imply this is being done to save money proves that the Council is ‘spinning out of control’. It’s time to be honest, to admit that Christmas lights should not have been put up, and apologise.

"Once again Rochdale Metropolitan Borough is receiving national negative publicity which is not deserved by the people who live and work here.

"I urge the Lib-Dem leader and Cabinet to show some leadership and get a grip of this sort of situation that makes Rochdale Council look inept and foolish."
