A Level joy short lived for Toby Iloba

Date published: 21 August 2009

While most A Level students were out celebrating their exam results, Rochdale student Toby Iloba was told his results from the confines of Yarl's Wood Detention Centre.

Toby and his family face deportation back to their homeland Nigeria but are campaigning to remain in the UK on compassionate grounds.

The family claims that their father, who was a policeman, was murdered in Nigeria and that they face persecution if they return.

Toby gained 2 As and a B in his A Levels, grades which would normally see him sail into most universities. Instead he faces deportation with his sister Saskia and brother Emmanuel.

He achieved the highest score in his year in his final business exam and has a place at the University of Liverpool confirmed online.

Rochdale MP Paul Rowen is supporting the family's case. He said: “Like many people getting their A-Level Results, Toby is relieved that his hard work has paid off. It could all be for nothing though and this is one of the saddest parts of the Iloba family’s story.

"We have done everything possible to keep the family here but only [Government immigration minister] Phil Woolas can save them now!”
