PCSO Dominique Grimes, Chief Superintendent John O’Hare, Dave Godley from Impact Road Safety Unit, resident Anne Mackie and a group of youngsters that took part in the cycle training course.
Children from as young as 10 were getting on their bikes and learning how to stay safe in a special cycle training course organised by Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Dominique Grimes.
PCSO Grimes, who is usually seen riding around the Alkrington area on her bike, decided to hold the classes after resident Anne Mackie asked about summer activities for the children.
PCSO Grimes said: “I decided to help organise this to give the children something to do during the summer holidays which would help keep them active and would be a bit interactive.
“A lot of the children enjoy cycling and have seen me out and about on my bike in the neighbourhood so I thought this would be something that could get them out onto their bikes and into the sunshine.
“The day went brilliantly, everyone had so much fun and we were able to show them all some important cycle safety.”
During the class children learnt the basic M check, where youngsters are taught how to check their gears, tyres and chains and how to signal as well as balancing and safety tips while riding.
Anne Mackie of Brow Avenue, Alkrington, said: “The youngsters living in the area were getting a little bit bored at home during the holidays and were looking for things that they could do.
“I spoke to PCSO Grimes and asked her if there was anything she could do and she decided on this and it has been great.”
Chief Superintendent John O’Hare, Divisional Commander for Rochdale Division, said: “What Dominique has done for the children of the community is great. It’s a real reflection of how well she understands the needs of the people she serves and I am proud to have been here to see all her good work.”
