Volunteers renovate Spotland & Falinge Community Centre

Date published: 17 August 2009

The grounds of Spotland and Falinge Community Centre have been renovated thanks to hard work by some local volunteers.

Volunteers on Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale's Prince's Trust Team R81 did up the grounds as part of their skills enhancement training.

The team improved the garden landscape with the installation of two picnic benches, cutting and clearing up the overgrowths, laying work bark, planting flowers, plants and vegetables for the community to use, painting the existing front and back doors and the hand rails, removing graffiti and painting the garden walls.

Maureen Vella, Executive Chairman at Spotland Community Association Ltd, said: “I would like to thank Groundwork Team Leader, Lisa Daly and her team members for all the fundraising and hard work put into the improvement schemes at the centre. The work will benefit a great deal of users from the local community.”

To carry out their work flawlessly the team was determined to do their utmost and raise funds and donations through various fundraising activities and they are still aiming to get more.

Lisa Daly, Prince’s Trust Team Leader, commented: “I am very proud of all the hard work that Rochdale Team R81 has put into the project. They have managed to secure excellent fundraising opportunities, which have improved Spotland & Falinge Community Centre and will in turn benefit the local community.

“There’s still a negative perception surrounding young people and how Rochdale has a high rate of drugs and teenage pregnancy but I wish people would look that little bit further and see the hard work these and many more young people put in wanting to improve the area they live in and of course improve their prospects”

The project hand over was a proud moment for all involved and was attended by ward councillors Peter Clegg and Barbara Todd.
