Work to the Rakewood Viaduct, which carries motorway traffic over Hollingworth Lake, is set to cause delays on the M62.
£2.6 million is being spent on repair work and improvements to the bridge.
The 100,000 drivers who use the viaduct every day will face delays as a 50mph speed restriction will be in place.
There will also be some overnight lane closures but for the most part engineers hope to retain three lanes in both directions.
Bridge joints will be replaced, the carriageway resurfaced and new lighting and central barrier will be installed as part of the major scheme.
Preparatory work on the viaduct started yesterday with the main work taking place throughout September and October and completed by the end of November.
Project manager Andrew Olive said: “This is an important investment in a vital section of the M62. The work is important to maintain the bridge in a safe, serviceable condition."
