Three Owls appeal for urgent cash

Date published: 14 August 2009

The Three Owls bird sanctuary in Norden is making a heartfelt appeal for charity cash.

The sanctuary has been hit hard by the recession and only has enough money in its coffers to remain open for a few more months.

Three Owls has launched an appeal, via its website at www.threeowls.co.uk, for more public donations, in order to keep the 47-year old sanctuary going.

Sanctuary manager Nigel Fowler said: "Since 1962 we have seen many hard times, but we have always battled through with absolutely fantastic public support. This past 18 months has been especially tough, and we find the sanctuary, which is now the most efficient it has ever been, is costing more than we are raising day-to-day."

The cost of running the sanctuary each month is £10,000, and it only has £30,000 left in the bank.

Each year the sanctuary gives help to around 2000 wild birds and gives out hundreds of hours of advice via its emergency helpline.

Mr Fowler continued: "If we do not get the funds, we may have to close and that is unthinkable, not only for all the thousands of birds out there needing our help, but also for those currently in our care. Without our help they would nearly all die."
