Date published: 13 August 2009

A man was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver after disrupting two men who were trying to break into his car.

The 19-year old man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries and remains in a stable condition.

The man tried to stop the two thieves from breaking into his Nissan Micra, which was parked on Tweedale Street in Freehold, shortly before 00.25am yesterday morning (Wednesday 12 August).

The pair, who are described as white, 5ft 9in tall, about 25 years old and with spotty faces, ran off towards the Freehold estate.

Detective Constable Wayne Hagan, from Rochdale CID, said: "This man was defending his property when he was violently stabbed by one of the men.

"He was taken to hospital with the screwdriver still in his chest and I cannot begin to imagine how terrifying that must have been.

"If you have any information whatsoever about who is responsible or saw the incident please call police."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4644, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
