Middleton guard faces murder trial

Date published: 10 August 2009

A security guard from Middleton has been arrested in Baghdad following the death of two of his colleagues.

Danny Fitzsimons appeared in court today and is set for a fast-track murder trial in Iraq.

Mr Fitzsimons was working for UK security company ArmorGroup in Baghdad at the time of his arrest. He has been charged with the murder of British colleague Paul McGuigan and Australian Darren Hoare after becoming involved in a row following a late-night drinking session in the company's Baghdad compound.

The two men were shot and Iraqi guard wounded shortly before Mr Fitzsimons was seen running into a street outside the compound carrying a handgun.

Now Iraqi officials say they have all the evidence they need to send the guard to trial and it is very unlikely that he will be handed over to British colleagues or face trial in the UK.

If convicted by an Iraqi court, Mr Fitzsimons could face the death penalty.
