Technical problems hit GMP telephone system
Date published: 08 August 2009
Greater Manchester Police experienced technical problems with its telephone system on Friday 7 August, a problem occurred which affected emergency and non-emergency calls.
Emergency calls were transferred to surrounding police forces, but all 999 calls are now being dealt with by GMP staff.
However, the technical problems remained, which mainly affected the non-emergency number.
Superintendent Karan Lee, of GMP’s Operation Communications Branch, said: “We are working with BT to rectify this problem, but I would ask people at this time to call 999 only in an emergency.
”Officers are working hard to ensure this does not have an impact on frontline policing.
”More officers have been deployed out on the streets while this problem is dealt with.”
