Police tackle off road biking

Date published: 05 August 2009

Officers from Greater Manchester Police, Rochdale Division have been warning members of the public and motorists about the dangers of off road biking.

The officers and PCSOs from Middleton Neighbourhood Policing Team held a special patrol of Alkrington and Rhodes Woods on 2 August to address concerns of nuisance motors head on and to catch any offenders. The Roads Policing Unit, councillors Theresa Fitzsimons and Mike Holly as well as Alkrington Angling Club, Friends of Alkrington Woods and the rangers of Healey Dell joined them.

Typically over the summer holidays, police tend to see an increase in the number of complaints from local residents as youngsters and adults have more free time to ride their bikes.

Inspector Gary Hall, for Middleton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The day went really well and attracted a number of different groups from the community who are concerned about the problems that off road bikers bring.

“This high profile presence really helped in showing those with off road bikes that we take this very seriously and that action will be taken against anyone flouting the law or putting the lives of others at risk by riding them dangerously.

“It is illegal to drive them on any public road or public space and not only are they a nuisance, but they are also a real danger to both the public and the rider.”

Jeff Morson, chairman of Alkrington Angling Club, said: “Off road bikers have been a problem in the woods for a long time, however we raised our concerns with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team and together this initiative was created.

“We now plan to have stronger links with police which will support in putting an end to the misery off road biking brings to the whole community.”

Councillor Teresa Fitzsimons, for South Middleton said: “The event was a great success. Considering this was our first time doing this we learnt a great deal, we now know that in future we would be better placed to conduct this during late afternoon when more off road bikers are likely.”

If residents in Middleton have any concerns about the use of off road bikes, they are encouraged to contact Greater Manchester Police on 0161 872 5050 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Residents in the Middleton area can also contact their Neighbourhood Policing Team directly about any issues related to crime or anti-social behaviour.
