Local people are being given the opportunity to shape the future governance of the council.
Under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007, the council must take reasonable steps to consult people on whether they would prefer:
- A Leader with Cabinet Executive
- An Elected Mayor with Cabinet Executive
- An Elected Mayor would be directly elected by the borough's electorate and a Leader would be elected by the members of the Council
Both the Elected Mayor and the Leader would serve for four years, but the Council could have the power to remove the Leader during the four year term of office.
The council currently has a Leader and cabinet model of constitution and has indicated its preference at this moment in time to continue to operate a Leader and Cabinet Executive under the new legislation.
The council is consulting on whether to adopt a Leader and Cabinet Executive model of governance rather than an Elected Mayor. It is also seeking views on whether the Council should have the power to remove the Leader during the four year term of office. If you wish to respond, please send your comments to Fiona Shepherd:
