Local unemployment continues to rise

Date published: 03 August 2009

Unemployment continues to rise in the Borough of Rochdale, the latest figures (for June 2009) show an increase of 93 in the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA).

The JSA count has increased month on month since March 2008 when 3,977 people were claiming JSA, compared with 7,316 in June 2009.

Councillor Mohammed Sharif, cabinet member for regeneration at Rochdale Borough Council said: “We have seen a monthly increase in the numbers of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance. Over the past year, however, we have seen a slightly smaller percentage increase than the national average.

“The council and its partners are committed to maximising job opportunities, improving individuals’ skills and training and offering information, advice and guidance to job seekers in this tough economic climate. We are holding another Jobs and Skills Fair at the Town Hall on 22 September where employers and training providers will offer practical support and advice to get people back into employment. From October, thanks to the successful Greater Manchester Future Jobs Fund bid, there will be £52 million invested in to the region to create as many as 8,000 jobs. This means that hundreds of new opportunities will become available in Rochdale borough to offer paid work to young people and those who have been unemployed for a long time."
