Sparth Summer Festival 2009

Date published: 02 August 2009

The Summer Festival at Sparth Community Centre was a hive of excited activity with children and adults of all ages enjoying the sunshine AND a mixture of fun activities and more earnest information, such as health and crime prevention advice.

Two large bouncy castles, henna painting, face painting, a treasure hunt and a football hit the cone competition were amongst the activities being enjoyed.

Talking to Rochdale Online, Sparth Centre Manager Kenny Farrar said: “This is our main fund raising event and the one time all the groups who use the centre and members of the community come together.

“I am pleased that once again the event is reasonably well attended with around 300 people coming throughout the day.”

Organisations attending to promote their cause, and others to help with advice for the local community, included Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale NHS, who were there to promote health living. Mike Fishwick checked our photographers blood pressure – a healthy 109/67, and his Body Mass Index – a healthy 21.7. Mr Fishwick said: “We are here to help people with health and lifestyle advice and to promote our health trainer service.”

The Mobile Police Unit was making a rare appearance (it is very much in demand and gets booked up six months in advance) staffed by PCSO Martyn Beever of P2 South Division. PCSO Beever said: “Our aim is to give crime prevention advice and help people with personal security.”

Friends of Springfield Park had a marquee with lots of information available about their campaign to persuade the council to keep Springfield Park a resource for all the community instead of building a golf driving range that will be used by only a very small minority. David Logan commented: “It is a fun day and we are joining in the spirit of that, but we also have a serious aim and that is to hopefully add to the already overwhelming support we have to keep Springfield Park for the whole community and to promote its use for all kinds of activity.”
