Reducing pressure of alcohol related admissions to Rochdale Infirmary

Date published: 01 August 2009

A new post has been established to help reduce the pressure of alcohol related admissions to Rochdale Infirmary Accident and Emergency (A&E). Anne Livesey has been appointed as the borough’s new alcohol practitioner and will work with patients attending A&E due to alcohol by giving them advice and support on how to manage their alcohol intake.

In Rochdale there were 10,164 hospital stays for alcohol related harm, an increase from the 1,676 admissions in 2008, according to the Health Profile 2008/9.

“Alcohol can and will continue to play a part in the lives of the majority of the adult population in Rochdale with no real problems but a high proportion of people who regularly drink over recommended limits are classed as hazardous or harmful drinkers,” said Jenny Lovett from the Rochdale Drug and Alcohol Action Team.

“These are not people who require specialist alcohol treatment but evidence suggests that identifying these people early, and giving them brief targeted advice, both consumption levels and the risk of harm can be reduced.”
