Celebrating Springhill Hospice’s 20 anniversary

Date published: 29 July 2009

As part of the on-going celebrations to mark Springhill Hospice’s 20 Anniversary, the Hospice, on Broad Lane, Rochdale, will be holding an Open Gardens Day.

The idea belongs to Hospice gardener, Nick Dent, who won the ‘North West in Bloom’ award in 2007 for his work at the Hospice.

The Hospice gardens have been nominated for another ‘North West in Bloom’ award this year. Displays will include a wildflower meadow, naturalistic and cottage garden borders, bedding displays, a herb garden and a sensory garden.

Mr Dent says: “I receive so many lovely comments about our gardens that I felt it would be a nice experience for people who wouldn’t necessarily come to the Hospice to have an opportunity to see our grounds. In addition it is another way to raise some funds as visitors will have an opportunity to buy some of the plants we grow here and hopefully get some fresh ideas for their own garden at home.”

The Opens Garden Day is due to be held on Friday 7 August, between the hours of 10:00am and 3:00pm. There will be refreshments available and there is full disables and wheelchair access.

The independent charitable organization is due to host another parachute jump fundraising event following the success of their last joint event. The Hospice has once again teamed up with international events specialists Skyline and has 20 places reserved with the famous Black Knights Parachute Team.

On offer to valiant participants is a ‘Tandem Skydive’ from 10,000 feet, attached to a professional instructor and free-falling at 120mph. The jump will take place at Lancaster Airfield on Sunday 25 October.
